The Chequer Stitch is a series of alternating 4x4 blocks of diagonal satin stitches and tent stitches to create a checkerboard look. The tent stitch I personally prefer to use here is basketweave, though continental will work great too. This stitch makes for a super fun background and works best in medium to large areas of solid color!
